Leave your checkbook at home when you head to Target. Starting July 15, the retailer will no longer accept personal checks for payments.
“Due to extremely low volumes, we’ll no longer accept personal checks starting July 15,” Target announced in a statement. “We have taken several measures to notify guests in advance to aid an easy and efficient checkout experience.”
The acceptance of personal checks will continue through Target Circle Week, running from July 7-13, as reported by Minneapolis TV station KARE. Target’s headquarters are in Minneapolis.
Payment Options at Target
Target offers several payment options to ensure a convenient checkout experience. According to the company’s statement, customers can pay using:
– Target Circle Cards (formerly Target RedCard)
– Cash
– Digital wallets
– SNAP/EBT
– Buy now, pay later services
– Credit and debit cards
Customers can still send personal checks by mail for Target Circle Card payments.
The use of personal checks has significantly declined in recent years. According to Federal Reserve Financial Services, consumer use of personal checks dropped to just 3% of payments in 2023, down from 4% in 2021 and 2022, and 7% in 2020.
Other major retailers, including Aldi and Whole Foods Markets, also do not accept personal checks.
