Simon Ekpa’s Arrest Sparks Fear Among Nigerians in Finland

Nigerians residing in Finland have been gripped by fear following the arrest of Simon Ekpa, a prominent separatist leader associated with the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Finnish authorities detained Ekpa alongside four others on suspicion of incitement to violence and financing terrorism.

Reports indicate that members of the Nigerian community in Finland are reluctant to speak out due to fears of reprisal attacks by Ekpa’s followers. A Nigerian community leader, who chose to remain anonymous, explained that the Igbo community has been profoundly impacted by the alleged violent activities linked to Ekpa.

“People are afraid to comment on his arrest. Those perceived as cooperating with authorities are being targeted,” the source revealed.

Another resident noted rising tensions, stating, “Ekpa’s followers are known to be aggressive. Many fear they might retaliate against anyone speaking publicly against their leader.”

Background on Ekpa’s Activities

Simon Ekpa, who refers to himself as the Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile, is accused of inciting violence in southeastern Nigeria, resulting in attacks on civilians and security forces. He gained notoriety for calling for election boycotts during Nigeria’s 2023 general elections, which led to violent enforcement measures.

Ekpa’s social media accounts have remained inactive since his recent detention, and the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation has described the case as part of an international effort to combat terrorism.

Nigeria’s Response and Potential Extradition

The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has acknowledged the arrest as a significant step toward addressing IPOB’s influence. Meanwhile, discussions surrounding Ekpa’s extradition to Nigeria have raised concerns due to the absence of a direct treaty between Finland and Nigeria.

Ambassador Yemi Farounbi suggested that multilateral agreements or international legal frameworks might facilitate Ekpa’s extradition despite the legal complexities.

Community Reactions

While IPOB members in Nigeria expressed relief over Ekpa’s detention, citing its potential to restore peace in the southeastern region, other pro-Biafra groups are still evaluating the situation.

As Nigerians on social media call for the identification of Ekpa’s sponsors, authorities continue to investigate the broader network behind his alleged activities, aiming to dismantle any transnational support system.
