Senator Smart Adeyemi, the former lawmaker representing Kogi-West senatorial district has demanded a comprehensive probe into the leaked tape of the discussion which borders on corruption between Justice Akoh Ikpeme and his successor, Senator Dino Maleye.
The tape which was first posted by online media Sahara Reporters, has been trending online and many has attributed the recording to some connection that has to do with corruption.
Senator Adeyemi, who made the call on Sunday while speaking to journalist in Abuja, is a candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party contested and lost in the 2015 general election to Melaye.
He explained that the manner in which Justice Ikpeme with her team handled the sitting of the Elections Tribunal in Lokoja left so much to be explained. He therefore called for thorough investigation by the Chief Justice of the Federation, the Ministry of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, EFCC, ICPC, DSS, and National Judicial Council.
“I want to make an emphasis with every sense of responsibity that in the Nigeria Judiciary, there are people with high integrity, God fearing people. Our judiciary is one of the best in Africa and our professionals are of international best standards. They are best when it comes to legal practice globally.
“Back to the major point of discussion, you need to see how shocked and perplexed people of the senatorial district were after justice Akon Ikpeme passed the ruling at the National Assembly Tribunal in Lokoja.
He further said the decision of Justice Ikpeme was hurriedly struck out without any justifiable reason. He said that his legal team returned back to the tribunal after his legal team procedeed to Appeal Court for redress, with ruling that the matter should be heard.
“When we noticed foul play with the way our petition was struck out, we petitioned the President of the Court of Appeal in order to assign us another judge. We want the president to re-assign the case to Justice Diran Akintola”, Adeyemi said.
