PDP Urges Tinubu to Tackle Insecurity and Food Crisis in New Year Address

  • Calls for Transparency on Subsidy Funds and Accountability for Governance Failures

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to use his New Year address to announce concrete measures to alleviate insecurity, hunger, and rising fuel costs in the country.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, on Wednesday in Abuja, the PDP criticized Tinubu’s previous speeches, describing them as “empty rhetoric” devoid of actionable solutions. The opposition party urged the president to outline clear steps to address the nation’s pressing challenges and provide accountability for government spending.

“The PDP insists that Nigerians deserve a president who will prioritize their welfare, not one who offers unsubstantiated statistics and false promises. President Tinubu must address the issues of corruption, wasteful spending, and disregard for citizens’ suffering, which have defined his administration so far,” Ologunagba stated.

The party also demanded a detailed account of the billions of naira reportedly saved from the removal of petroleum subsidies. It called for an investigation into the alleged diversion of over N25 trillion by officials of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and government agencies.

“Mr. President must come clean on his commitment to fighting corruption. Nigerians deserve transparency regarding the management of public funds and the reported misappropriation by APC leaders who have turned government agencies into personal ATMs while millions languish in poverty,” the PDP said.

The opposition further highlighted the government’s failure to address state-backed violence, including the 2020 #EndSARS killings. It lamented the growing despair among citizens, which has driven some to emigrate under dangerous conditions.

“The last 18 months under this administration have been the most excruciating period for Nigerians since the Civil War. The APC government’s anti-people policies have plunged citizens into unimaginable hardship while leaders flaunt opulent lifestyles,” Ologunagba added.

The PDP urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and law-abiding as they approach 2025, emphasizing the importance of defending democracy, transparency, and accountability in governance. “This is the path to restoring stability and prosperity to our nation, which has suffered under APC’s misrule since 2015,” the party concluded, wishing Nigerians a happy and prosperous New Year.
