Chinese mainland reports 9 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, all imported

Chinese health authority said on Thursday that it received reports of nine new confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland on Wednesday and that all of them were imported. Of the nine new imported cases, three were reported in Liaoning and Shanghai each, two in Guangdong and one in Sichuan, the National Health Commission said in its daily report. No new deaths related to the disease or new suspected cases were reported. On Wednesday, 42 COVID-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovery. By the end of Wednesday, a total of 1,958 imported cases had been reported on the mainland. Of them, 1,884 had been discharged from hospitals after recovery, and 74 remained hospitalised, with no one in serious conditions. No deaths from the imported cases had been reported. As of Wednesday, the overall confirmed cases on the mainland had reached 83,581 including 357 patients who were still being treated, with five in severe conditions. Altogether 78,590 people had been discharged after recovery, and 4,634 had died of the disease on the mainland, the commission said. The commission said five people, including two from outside the mainland, were still suspected of being infected with the virus. According to the commission, 3,840 close contacts were still under medical observation after 706 people were discharged from medical observation Wednesday. Also on Wednesday, six new asymptomatic cases, including five from outside the mainland, were reported and one asymptomatic case was re-categorized as a confirmed case. The commission said 112 asymptomatic cases, including 79 from outside the mainland, were still under medical observation. As of Wednesday, 1,323 confirmed cases including seven deaths had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 46 confirmed cases in the Macao SAR, and 449 in Taiwan including seven deaths. Kwara Chief of Staff, Aminu Logun, buried in Ilorin residence

The remains of the late Chief of Staff (CoS) to Gov. Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq of Kwara, Aminu Logun, were interred on Wednesday in Ilorin, the state capital. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Logun died on Tuesday evening from COVID-19 complications. The late Chief of Staff was buried at his GRA home on Ijumu Road in Ilorin in line with COVID-19 protocols. NAN reports that the burial was supervised by a team of the COVID-19 Technical Committee and in accordance with Islamic injunctions. The janazah prayer was led by the Chief Imam of Ilorin, Mohammed Bashir. In a brief sermon, an Islamic scholar, Dr Abubakar Aliagan, described the late Chief of Staff as a silent achiever, a philanthropist as well as promoter of unity. “Alhaji Aminu Adisa Logun since we knew him was a complete gentleman and a lover of humanity. “I can recall may be the last time he came to the family mosque, he made some corrections to the mosque by himself to improve the structure,” he said. Aliagan prayed Allah to accept him as one of his servants and grant him aljanah fridaus. Present at the burial were the Deputy Governor, Kayode Alabi, Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Mamman Jubril, and Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, Saadudeen Salaudeen. Nigerian aviation rebounds as flights resume at Lagos airport

Domestic flights in Nigeria resumed on Wednesday. Airline operations were halted three months ago due to the coronavirus pandemic. At GAT Alpha and MM2 terminals in Lagos, a few passengers were seen boarding, while social distancing and other precautionary measures were observed. The airlines, however, hiked their fares for flights from Lagos to Abuja, NAN reports. Air Peace sold its economy plan for N33,000 for a one-way Lagos-Abuja trip while the business class ticket cost N80,000. However, Arik Air charged N29,200 for its economy plan The business class went for N78,599. Director of Aviation Security, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Usman Sadiq, assured that adequate security measures had been put in place. He said security agencies across airports in the country had been directed to tackle security breaches.

Ondo Assembly suspends Deputy Speaker, one lawmaker

The Deputy Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Iroju Ogundeji has been suspended. Ogundeji was suspended alongside another member of the House, Hon. Adewale Williams. The two lawmakers were suspended by the leadership of the House on Wednesday during plenary for unruly behaviour. The affected lawmakers were among the nine lawmakers who did not sign the impeachment notice against the embattled Deputy Governor of the state, Agboola Ajayi.
