Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address the urgent welfare needs of Nigerians amid growing economic pressures. Speaking at the 2024 Women in Management, Business, and Public Service (WIMBIZ) conference, Osinbajo emphasized the need for targeted social welfare programs and accessible healthcare, noting that many Nigerians are grappling with soaring costs for essentials such as food, transportation, and housing.
“The cost of living is overwhelming Nigerians’ hope for survival,” Osinbajo stated, drawing attention to the critical issue of food insecurity that is hitting vulnerable populations, especially children, the hardest. He called for more robust support systems to ensure that basic needs are met across the country.
Osinbajo also underscored Nigeria’s literacy crisis, particularly in the northern regions, where over 67% of women are illiterate. “A nation where half of the population is socially and economically disempowered due to illiteracy will struggle to achieve meaningful development,” he remarked.
He advocated for comprehensive social interventions to tackle these systemic issues, stressing that improvements in literacy and economic empowerment are essential to Nigeria’s progress and stability.
