Edo State Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa, has disclosed that former Governor Adams Oshiomhole opposed the appointment of his son, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, as Commissioner for Health-designate.
Governor Monday Okpebholo announced Dr. Cyril’s appointment last Tuesday in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua.
In an interview on Channels Television on Wednesday, Idahosa described Cyril as a highly qualified medical doctor with the credentials to serve in the state cabinet.
“Senator Adams Oshiomhole is a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and his son, like any other individual, has his own destiny,” Idahosa stated. “Cyril is a seasoned medical doctor who studied in Nigeria and furthered his education in the United States. His appointment is based solely on merit, not his family ties.”
Refuting claims of nepotism, Idahosa clarified that Adams Oshiomhole, a former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), had initially opposed his son’s nomination.
“This decision has nothing to do with Adams Oshiomhole. In fact, he was against the nomination,” Idahosa revealed. “Governor Okpebholo appointed Cyril because of his competence and his vision for the state, not because of his father.”
Responding to comparisons with former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s remarks on state capture, Idahosa emphasized that Edo State’s leadership prioritizes competence and public service.
“What is happening in Edo State is far from state capture. This is about delivering results for the people and ensuring qualified individuals are in positions of responsibility,” he stated.
Idahosa also highlighted his own role as deputy governor, noting that his primary statutory function includes chairing the boundary commission while also collaborating with the governor on cabinet matters.
