- Company Counters Claims of Non-Functionality with Open Invitation
- Emphasizes Transformation into a Global Energy Leader
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has extended an invitation to former President Olusegun Obasanjo to tour the Port Harcourt Refinery and verify its operational status, following his recent criticisms of the facility.
In a Channels Television interview, Obasanjo cited advice from Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), which had declined an equity stake in the refinery, citing corruption concerns and inefficiencies. He further alleged that NNPCL misled Nigerians about the refinery’s functionality.
In a statement, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, addressed the claims and invited Obasanjo to witness the refinery’s progress firsthand.
“We respectfully extend an open invitation to President Obasanjo for a tour of the rehabilitated refineries to see the progress made under the new NNPC Limited. His wisdom and experience are invaluable, and his advice will always be welcomed,” Soneye stated.
He emphasized that NNPCL has transitioned from a government corporation to a profit-driven international energy company, with a focus on transforming Nigeria’s refineries into world-class facilities.
“This is not just another Turnaround Maintenance (TAM) but a full-scale overhaul of the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, with similar efforts ongoing at the Kaduna Refinery. We are committed to maintaining these refineries to global standards and ensuring sustainable operations,” Soneye added.
Soneye noted that NNPCL’s evolution into a limited liability company marks a significant shift, enabling it to prioritize profitability and energy security.
Responding to media reports alleging NNPCL’s plans to stop supplying crude oil to the Dangote Refinery, Soneye dismissed the claims as false.
“We deeply respect President Obasanjo’s contributions to Nigeria’s development and value his insights. Together, we can continue building a brighter future for our nation,” he concluded.
The invitation underscores NNPCL’s effort to counter skepticism about its operations while reinforcing its commitment to transparency and energy security.
