UNN engineering conference’ll provide alternative to petrol – Dean
Prof. Emenike Ejiogu, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) says the faculty’s International Conference will provide conversations on how to run car engines on ethanol instead of petrol.
Ejiogu said this in Nsukka on Wednesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the faculty’s forth coming conference tagged “3rd Sustainable Engineering and Industrial Technology Conference.”
The conference is scheduled to hold from Aug. 22 to Aug.25 at UNN.
Ejiogu said the conference would enable staff and students of the institution showcase their engineering works that would address the problems of climate change, energy and petrol subsidy removal.
“There will be exhibition of things produced by the faculty, especially on bio-fuel engines that use ethanol instead of petrol to power generating sets and cars among others.
“The petrol subsidy removal by the Federal Government recently resulted in outrageous hike in petrol pump price, so using ethanol produced from cassava or yam would be an alternative to petrol in powering petrol engines.
“Many research groups in the faculty have focused their research on bio-fuel engines to reduce current sufferings of Nigerians as result of removal of petrol subsidy.
“Ethanol is cheap and affordable than petrol,” Ejiogu said.
The Dean said that the technological exhibitions would showcase notable students and staff research outputs in order to attract collaborations within and outside the country.
He said some industries would also exhibit their new technological products to the university community, to facilitate town and gown collaboration.
According to him, Hossein Rouhani, an Associate Professor of Neuromuscularo Control and Biomechanics, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Alberta, Canada, would be the keynote speaker.
An international scholar, Prof. Paul Eke, Executive Director, Peprime Limited and a member of Royal Academy of Engineering, United Kingdom would make presentation during the conference.
Prof. Sebastain Timmerberg, a Professor of Environmental Engineering and a Director at Steinbeis Institute for Materials Applications and 3D Printing Solutions, Karlsruhe, aside others are expected to grace the occasion.
President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, said that democracy must be progressive and inclusive with a primary focus on tackling poverty through the provision of job opportunities for youths and quality education for all Nigerian children.
Tinubu expressed support for the establishment of the National Institute of Progressive Studies while receiving members of the National Working Committee, NWC, of the All Progressives Congress, APC, on Thursday, in Lagos.
The President noted that the Institute is expected to carry out diligent research and educate all party members on the principles of democracy and good governance while providing a distinct identity for the party.
”Democracy has faced challenges in the past, but I believe in a promising future for our country. We will deliver it.
“I am committed to supporting a strong and ideologically-determined democracy that is progressive, inclusive, and focused on eliminating poverty while providing quality education for our children.
”Collaboration with various government arms is crucial, and I commend the leadership of our party for working hard to promote these essential ideals,” the President stated.
Chioma Blessing Obidigbo, an 18-year-old girl, has emerged as the top performer in the 2022 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE), organised by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
The announcement was made at the opening ceremony of the WAEC 61st Annual Meeting of the Nigeria National Committee, held in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
The young girl could not attend the ceremony due to her ongoing university studies in the United Kingdom. However, her parents, Mr and Mrs Matthew Obidigbo, accepted the award on her behalf.
