The Kwara Government has warned waste contractors to operate responsibly or face sanctions.

The state Commissioner for Environment, Mrs Abosede Buraimoh, gave the warning in a statement on Thursday by Mrs Taiwo Okanlawon, spokesperson of the ministry.

She issued the warning during an inspection and monitoring tour to check the duties and activities of the waste contractors in Ilorin.

The commissioner said that the government had noted the lackadaisical attitude of the evacuators, hence needing proper attention for the enforcement in ensuring that the state is free from accumulated waste.

Buraimoh also ordered for timely collection and disposal of waste from households and public places to prevent illegal dumping of waste.

“Refuse dumped indiscriminately will continue if we continue showing nonchalant and unseriousness to work.

“Government will no longer tolerate this act, as ours is to protect the lives of the people, and make sure they are not exposed to danger through a littered environment,” she said.

The commissioner called on waste evacuators to be up and doing in discharging their responsibilities effectively, toward a clean environment as well as for the betterment of the state.

She said that government has being working through the intervention scheme and would not relent on its efforts in ensuring total compliance of the public to the sanitation laws.
