Elijah Cummings, a United State’s member of the House of Representatives on the platform of the Democrats, has died at the age of 68.
According to a statement released on Thursday, October 17, by his office, Cummings died of complications arising from his health challenges, CNN reports.
Cummings was the chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, one of the key panels involved in the impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump.
The lawmaker, usually called congressman in the US political terms, had represented Maryland’s 7th Congressional District since 1996. Cummings was reportedly respected by all lawmakers, notwithstanding political affiliations.

Cummings was described as a staunch critic of President Trump who had overseen a series of investigations into the US president’s administration.
Apart from the impeachment inquiry, Cummings had overseen investigations into Trump’s handling of migrants, citizenship and others.
However, President Trump has sent his condolences to the family and friends of Cummings following the announcement of his death.
Trump tweeted: “My warmest condolences to the family and many friends of Congressman Elijah Cummings. I got to see first hand the strength, passion and wisdom of this highly respected political leader. His work and voice on so many fronts will be very hard, if not impossible, to replace!”
