1). Comrade David Ukuma, the newly inaugurated chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Benue State chapter, is dead.

Ukuma, who was until his demise a senior reporter with Radio Benue, passed away Saturday after a brief illness.

2). A Makurdi High Court presided over by the Hon. Justice Theresa Igoche on Friday granted leave to the Governor of Benue State, Dr. Samuel Ortom, to serve the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole his writ of summons in Suit no: MHC/280/2018.

Counsel to Ortom, Mr Samuel Irabor, moved an ex-parte application seeking the leave of the court to serve the defendants at Abuja outside the Benue State Judicial Division.

3). The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun State has released names of forty eight political parties that are contesting for the forthcoming governorship election slated for September 22, including names of governorship candidates and deputies.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner for the state, Mr Segun Agbaje in his remarks during the presentation of soft copies of voters’ register to political parties, said the exercise was in line with the electoral act of the country and the guidelines of the Commission.

4). The Nigerian Air Force, NAF, has claimed that the Air Task Force, ATF, for Operation DIRAN MIKIYA, has successfully executed air strikes that destroyed more bandit camps in Daji Bawar and Sunke Villages in Zamfara State.

Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, who disclosed this, said the strikes were planned on the heels of intelligence reports indicating that some bandits who had survived the intensive air assaults on their various hideouts at Shinkafi, Galadi, Ajia, Shamashalle and other areas of Zamfara State had relocated to Anka Local Government Area (LGA) of the State.

5). The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the death of two children in a kerosene explosion which occurred at Ezzamgbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Loveth Odah, said the matter was reported at the Divisional Police Station Ezzamgbo, by one Mr Chinedu Onwe, who suffered severe burns from the explosion, after purchasing the product from Dipro filling station at Ezzmagno junction.

6). The Peoples Democratic Party in Kogi West Senatorial District has said no aspirant will be granted automatic ticket to contest the 2019 general election.

The PDP took the decision on Saturday at a meeting of major stakeholders and party executives in Kogi West Senatorial District.

7). Senate President Bukola Saraki says he is not losing sleep over the plot of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to remove him.

Saraki said those seeking to oust him are “engaging in cheap blackmail”.

8). President Muhammadu Buhari has challenged military personnel saddled with the task of fighting bandits in Zamfara to be “as ruthless as humanly possible” in carrying out their assignment.

The president gave the charge when he addressed the 1000-strong military force at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport, Katsina, on Saturday.

9). A driver suspected to be drunk on Friday killed two police officers attached to the Oyo State Police command in Ibadan, the state capital.

The two officers attached to the Special Rapid Squad (SRS), it was gathered, were hit by the drunk driver and reportedly died as a result of the accident.

10). Former US presidential candidate of the Republican Party, Senator John McCain, has died at the age of 81 following a lost battle with brain cancer.

A terse statement by his office on Sunday morning said Senator McCain III died at 4:28 pm on August 25, 2018.
