The largest protests since the start of the war have erupted across Israel, accompanied by a widespread general strike. These demonstrations are the latest wave of public fury directed at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is under fire for his government’s failure to secure a ceasefire and bring back captives held in Gaza.
The protests began after the tragic recovery of six bodies of captives who had been held by Hamas and other Palestinian groups in the Gaza Strip since the war broke out on October 7. The Israel Business Forum, representing workers from 200 of the country’s largest companies, also joined the strike, as did leading tech firms such as Wix, Fiverr, HoneyBook, and Monday.com.
The Manufacturers Association of Israel condemned the government for failing in its “moral duty” to bring the captives home alive. The Israel Bar Association also called on lawyers across the country to strike in solidarity.
Essential Services Disrupted
The strike’s impact was felt across essential services. Hospitals and health clinics operated at lower capacity, while the national medical and ambulance service, Magen David Adom, managed to function normally. The Israel Electric Corporation and Mekorot water company reduced their operations during the strike, though fire and rescue services remained fully operational.
Many government and municipal offices, including those in Tel Aviv, were shut down. The Teacher’s Union announced that schools would only be open until 11:45 am, with special exceptions for schools serving students with special needs. Israel’s research universities also joined the economic shutdown, though some scheduled exams continued.
Transportation was heavily affected, with major bus companies, the Tel Aviv Light Rail, and Haifa’s Carmelit underground railway system participating in the strike. Train services across the country faced delays as the nation came to a standstill.
