Imo FRSC Launches Ember Months Campaign, Reports 43 Road Fatalities, 62 Crashes in 2024

Date:

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Imo State reported 62 road traffic crashes and 43 fatalities between January and October 2024. Sector Commander Anthony Uga shared the statistics during the launch of the 2024 “Ember Months” campaign in Owerri on Thursday. This year’s campaign, titled “Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving: Crashes Kill More Passengers Than Drivers,” aims to reduce road accidents during the busy holiday season.

Uga revealed that 234 individuals were injured in these accidents, with speeding identified as the primary cause. The most dangerous route was the Owerri-Aba corridor, where reckless driving and holiday-season “hustling” behaviors among drivers accounted for 70% of road issues.

He emphasized that the campaign would highlight the economic, health, and emotional toll of road accidents, the legal repercussions of traffic violations, and the importance of safe loading practices. Uga urged passengers to treat road safety as a shared responsibility, encouraging them to speak up against dangerous driving and remind drivers to drive responsibly.

“This campaign focuses on road safety to prevent crashes, especially from speeding,” Uga said. “We call on passengers to take their safety seriously and, as the theme suggests, to hold drivers accountable.”

Uga also expressed appreciation to Governor Hope Uzodinma for his support in enhancing road safety across the state. The event was attended by Commissioner for Transport Benson Agbaso and other state security leaders.
