- Oyo State High Court Sets Conditions as Investigation Continues
The Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has granted bail to Naomi Silekunola, former wife of the Ooni of Ife; Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, proprietor of Agidigbo FM; and Abdullahi Fasasi, Principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun. The trio faced charges connected to the tragic stampede during a children’s festive party in December 2024, which claimed the lives of at least 35 children.
Presiding over the case on Monday, Justice Kamorudeen Olawoyin approved their bail applications but imposed strict conditions. Hamzat’s bail was set at ₦10 million, with a requirement to provide two sureties. Additionally, the court ordered Agidigbo FM to refrain from broadcasting news related to the case to ensure the integrity of the investigation.
Bail Hearing Arguments
The defendants had filed for bail last Tuesday but were remanded in custody pending Monday’s decision. During the hearing, the defence counsel argued that the defendants posed no flight risk and had shown willingness to cooperate fully with the investigation.
In opposition, the Oyo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Abiodun Aikomo, cited the gravity of the charges and stressed the need to ensure justice for the victims and their families. “The seriousness of the case demands that we proceed with caution,” he argued, urging the court to consider the impact of the incident on the affected families.
Governor’s Stance
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has insisted on accountability for the stampede, which occurred during a festive event at Islamic High School, Bashorun. While he expressed no objection to granting bail to the suspects, the governor reiterated that justice must be served for the tragic loss of young lives.
