President Muhammadu Buhari has expressly ordered the Nigerian Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to search for oil in the North. Specifically Buhari ordered the national oil firm to begin the exploration of oil operation in the in the Benue Trough.
This is the second time President Buhari is making such demand from the NNPC.
The Benue Trough is about 1000km North east of Bight of Benin to the Lake Chad and is the major geological formation underlying a large part of Nigeria.
This was disclosed by Dr. Maikanti Bar, the group managing director of NNPC at the headquaters in Abuja, as he received the delegation from the Benue State government.
Baru said, “Very close home, we have exploration activities on the Frontier Basin, that is in the Chad; and there are some areas close to the Kolmani River where Shell has made indicative discovery of hydrocarbons and Mr. President has directed me to go into that area to further explore the magnitude and prospects of those finds.
NNPC boss further said the corporation is taking necessary steps to get its feet wet and plan to reinvigorate the frontier exploration along side collaboration with Northern Nigeria Development Company, in charge of Block 809.
Baru also talked about other Blocks that are yet to be assigned and said they firm is working towards proving a prospects in the region. He said, “We will also do the same at the Department of Petroleum Resources for the other blocks that have not been assigned, and work towards proving the prospects of that region.”
