No fewer than 200 policemen are expected to take charge of security at Sunday’s Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) deciding match between Rangers Int’l FC of Enugu and El-Kanemi Warrior of Maiduguri.

Rangers Media Officer, Foster Chime, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) after a security meeting between the club, League Management Company (LMC) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

“The meeting is a marathon one between us and the chairman of the NFF security committee who wants to ensure adequate security at the match venue.

“LMC and NFF are the ones in charge; Rangers is out of the picture but I know that there will be adequate policemen to man security.

“In normal league match, you can see about 50 policemen around but for this encounter we are expecting between 100 and 200 policemen,’’ Chime said.

According to Chime, the team is preparing for victory against El-Kanemi to ensure it wins the league title after 32 years.

“The players’ capability is not in doubt but what we are seeing in the league this period calls to question; so, we don’t want to jump the gun and start celebrating until after the match.

“The coach has told the players that they should play as if the league is still on and that they will be deceiving themselves if they play tomorrow’s match as if they’ve won the league.

“He also told them (players) not to underrate any team,’’ he added.

The Rangers media officer further said that the team was holding down celebration until the final whistle.

He said: “Right now, the mood in Enugu is for celebration but we are holding it down because in football anything can happen.

“We are in a celebration mood but not yet full because we still have El-Kanemi to contend with.

NAN reports that the match has been scheduled for the Nnamdi Azikiwe stadium, Enugu with the State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, throwing the gate open.

The “Flying Antelope” as Rangers FC is popularly called currently sits on top of the NPFL log with 60 points while El-Kanemi Warrior FC is occupying the eight place with 51 points from 35 matches.

Rivers United FC is second on the log with 57 points.
