Now that the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) has restricted candidates for 2017 online registration from choosing two public universities, some might have to opt for private universities if they can afford it.
Speaking to journalists, Head of Media and Information of JAMB, Fabian Benjamin said, the development was necessary because making provision for second choice of university is useless since they can’t even accomodate their first choices.
Mr. Benjamin, however, noted that candidates can select as many polytechnics and colleges of education they want.
The new measure by JAMB suggests that candidates can’t select two public universities, but can combine one public and a private university.
The new measure was disclosed on Friday by JAMB through its official Twitter handle @JambHQ.
The measure says: “Candidates can select NCE as their choice up to three times i.e 1st choice, 2nd choice and 3rd choice. But they are not allowed to select two public universities as choices. If candidates select a public university as their degree awarding choices, they are allowed to select a private university as another choice”.
Clarifying the statement, Mr Benjamin said the measure became necessary as candidates barely gain admission into their second and third choices universities. Thus leaving it there is of no use.
“Prospective candidates are now restricted to choose one public university but can have as many polytechnics and colleges of educatoin.
“What we discovered is that most universities can’t even afford to accomodate their first choice candidates, so why overload them with second choices?”, the JAMB official said.
In reaction, candidate has called the measure callous, lamenting that the board is only indirectly forcing them to opt for private university.
Some students said it would not have been an issue if huge sum of school fees associated with private universities are not involved, stating that most Nigerian parents can’t afford it.
A Twitter user, Robinson said: “What of the fees, will JAMB assist students to pay school fees in these private universities? You can’t enforce private university on someone”.
