FRSC Urges Patience, Attitudinal Change to Prevent Road Crashes

  • Passengers encouraged to actively promote road safety

In commemoration of the 2024 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Crash Victims, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ondo State Command, has called on motorists to adopt patience and a positive change in attitude to prevent road crashes.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Akure, Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, the Ondo Sector Commander, highlighted the devastating impact of road crashes, attributing most incidents to impatience and reckless driving.

The High Cost of Reckless Driving

Dr. Ibitoye explained that the theme of this year’s commemoration, “That Day”, invites road users to reflect on the tragic consequences of traffic accidents.

“There is a day a loved one dies or becomes injured; a day some become orphans; and a day breadwinners are lost. These tragedies can be avoided through patience and responsible driving,” Ibitoye said.

He urged all road users to adopt defensive driving techniques, maintain their vehicles, and avoid hazardous behaviors such as speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Passenger Responsibility and Collaboration

The sector commander also appealed to passengers to play an active role in promoting safety by discouraging dangerous driving during their trips.

“Passengers should not distract drivers but should participate to enhance safety. Remember, road crashes kill more passengers than drivers,” he added.

Ongoing FRSC Initiatives

Dr. Ibitoye reassured the public that the FRSC is committed to enhancing road safety through enforcement of traffic regulations and public awareness campaigns.

The command plans to collaborate with stakeholders, including the Nigerian Medical Association, to conduct medical outreach programs for drivers, focusing on eye tests, blood pressure checks, and other health assessments crucial for safe driving.

Safety Reminder for the Ember Months

With the festive season approaching, Dr. Ibitoye emphasized the importance of patience on the roads.

“It is only the living that celebrates. Drive responsibly and ensure that you and your passengers arrive safely to meet your loved ones,” he concluded.

As road users reflect on the impact of traffic accidents, the FRSC’s call for patience and attitudinal change serves as a timely reminder to prioritize safety for all.
