- FEC Honors Former Head of State on His 90th Birthday
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has renamed the University of Abuja as Yakubu Gowon University to honor Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who recently marked his 90th birthday.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, announced the decision on Monday after a FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu at the State House.
“This renaming recognizes General Gowon’s enduring contributions to Nigeria’s unity and development,” Idris told journalists.
The proposal, he noted, will be sent to the National Assembly for formal approval. Once approved, the institution will officially bear the name of the elder statesman who led the country during a pivotal era in its history.
The move underscores the government’s effort to celebrate and immortalize key figures who have played transformative roles in shaping Nigeria’s identity.
