- Human rights advocate calls for justice and praises Ondo’s security model.
Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has called on the Federal Government to compensate the families of victims who lost their lives in recent stampedes across the country. Falana made this appeal on Friday during the Akeredolu Leadership Lecture Series in Akure, an event organized by the Ondo State Government to honor the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.
Speaking on the topic, Security Sector Reform in Promoting Peace, Stability, and Development: The Ondo State Example, Falana criticized the Nigerian Police for failing to provide adequate security during the stampedes in Ibadan, Anambra, and Abuja, which claimed over 65 lives.
“It was a failure of security, not poverty, that caused these tragic losses,” he said. “Whenever there is a large gathering, the police are responsible for ensuring safety, and this failure underscores the need for accountability.”
Falana highlighted Ondo State’s strides in security, particularly the establishment of the Ondo State Security Network, codenamed Amotekun, under Akeredolu’s leadership. He noted that Akeredolu’s defiance of federal opposition to Amotekun set a precedent for state policing, which has since gained national attention.
“The greatest tribute to Akeredolu is the recent agreement between the Federal Government and state governors to approve the creation of state police. Ondo State has exported the Amotekun phenomenon to Nigeria,” Falana added.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State, who succeeded Akeredolu, emphasized that the late governor’s leadership was characterized by integrity, transparency, and transformative initiatives. Aiyedatiwa described Akeredolu as a courageous leader who prioritized democracy and the rule of law.
“This administration chose to honor Akeredolu’s legacy rather than mark one year in office. His vision continues to guide us,” Aiyedatiwa said.
Other speakers at the event, including Chief Sehinde Arogbofa and Hon. Victor Olabimtan, lauded Akeredolu’s contributions and praised Aiyedatiwa for upholding his predecessor’s projects and policies.
The lecture series serves as a reminder of the late governor’s impact and the need for a more secure and just Nigeria.
