UNICAL’s Law Faculty threatened with de-accreditation
University of Calabar’s Faculty of Law is threatened with de-accreditation as a result of deplorable states of the available facilities.
UNICAL’s e-library, for instance, is down with computers there not functioning, Daily Post reported.
At the main Library, the Law Reports books there are of 2013 and 2014 whereas, the Faculty needs 2017 and above.
Confirming the situation in the department, the Head of Chamber, Mba E. Ukweni and Associate, Ntufam (Onun) Mba E. Ukweni (SAN) regretted the situation.
“We went to the e-library and the e-library is not functioning because the necessary tools and facilities required for it to function effectively are not available. I will discuss with authority concerned to see how they can get in touch with people who are conversant with that particular areas of learning to also come in to their assistance,” he stated.
Ukweni told DAILY POST shortly after inspecting the facilities in the department that, “Although the faculty has improved, there is still room for improvement, for instance, I have seen that they are crying for current Law Reports and books, because most of the Law Reports stopped in 2013 and 2014, so they need 2015, 2016 and 2017 which by the grace of God, we shall ensure that those particular set of Law Reports are made available to them.”
The Head of Chamber who presented sets of Nigerian Supreme Court Quarterly Law Reports (NSCQLR), All Federation Weekly Law Reports (ALL FWLR), Nigerian Weekly Law Reports (NWLR), said he promised to make available to the faculty four sets of Law Reports, namely, Nigerian Supreme Court Quarterly Law Reports (NSCQLR), Nigerian Weekly Law Reports (NWLR), Weekly Reports of Nigeria (WRN) and All Federation Weekly Law Reports (ALL FWLR) for use.

He said he undertook to make available to the faculty, the Law Reports for the next five years, starting from 2017 to 2021 explaining that the Acting Dean of the Faculty Dr (Mrs) Rose Ohiama Ugbe has already discussed with him about the problem of the faculty that may affect accreditation if intervention does not come immediately.
“Others, including my lecturers have approached me on the same issue and requested for intervention in the area of donating current law reports. I tried to plead at as then, since I was just tried to recover and requested that I should be given up to next year but the pressure was on me”
