Delta State Proposes N936B Budget for 2025, Prioritizing Infrastructure, Education, Economic Growth

Date:

The Delta State Government has approved the transmission of a proposed N936 billion budget for 2025 to the State House of Assembly for review and approval. This proposal was announced by the Commissioner for Economic Planning, Sonny Ekedayen, during a press briefing following a State Executive Council meeting led by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in Asaba, the state capital.

The budget, according to Ekedayen, allocates N587.4 billion (62.75%) to capital expenditure and N348.7 billion (37.25%) to recurrent expenditure. This proposed budget is 29.12% larger than the current year’s budget, underscoring the state’s commitment to key development areas, including agriculture, MSME support, youth empowerment, healthcare, education, tourism, and infrastructure.

Ekedayen emphasized that the budget will be entirely funded without borrowing, drawing primarily from Federal Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocations and projected internally generated revenue of at least N140 billion. “This budget reflects our commitment to advancing Delta’s development in a sustainable way,” he said, highlighting transparency and accountability as guiding principles.

Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, added that several community-impact projects were approved, aimed at enhancing the state’s infrastructure.

These include road rehabilitations in Ughelli and Asaba, construction of access roads, and the completion of multiple infrastructure projects in riverine areas. The council also approved high-profile appointments, including HRM Dr. Greg N. Oputa as Obi of Aboh and Prof. Epiphany Azinge as Asagba of Asaba Kingdom.

Public Works Commissioner Charles Aniagwu noted the council’s directive that contractors with projects delayed for over a year without mobilization may face termination, stressing the administration’s commitment to rigorous project standards.

Aniagwu also detailed plans for new infrastructure projects, including roads to open up access for businesses and internal road improvements across various local governments.

Riverine Infrastructure Commissioner Ebikeme Clark shared that the council approved the construction of a Model Secondary School in Oporoza and an access road to Nigeria Maritime University in Warri South-West Local Government Area, aiming to support education and connectivity in the region.
