Prominent human rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, has launched a scathing critique of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, accusing him of authoritarian practices and land-grabbing policies targeting vulnerable communities.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, Adeyanju condemned Wike’s recent actions, particularly the alleged forceful displacement of poor residents to benefit political allies. He also criticized the minister for carrying out demolitions without due legal process, describing the acts as unjust and detrimental to the FCT’s vulnerable populations.

“Bulldozing homes without following legal procedures criminalizes poverty,” Adeyanju said. “Historically, the poor have always been among us. Instead of supporting them, Wike exploits their situation, showing no regard for justice or due process.”

The activist further alleged that Wike’s leadership style is marked by authoritarianism and a tendency to retaliate against critics. He claimed Wike’s policies in the FCT reflect a disregard for the rule of law, including demolitions in the Ruga community project, which he argued lack proper legal backing.

A History of Tension

Adeyanju also addressed Wike’s remarks in a recent interview where the minister labeled him “jobless” and recounted past political disagreements. Wike claimed that he once blocked Adeyanju’s attempt to become the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a move Adeyanju dismissed as irrelevant.

“Wike dislikes criticism and lashes out when challenged,” Adeyanju said. “He has often contacted me over the years, but he ends friendships when his actions are questioned. This behavior reflects his god complex.”

The activist highlighted his decision to resign from politics in 2016, citing disillusionment with corruption in the PDP. Despite leaving partisan politics, Adeyanju continues to hold public officials accountable, a commitment he says has come at personal cost, including imprisonment and harassment.

A Warning for Tinubu

Adeyanju also warned that President Bola Tinubu may face betrayal from Wike, drawing on Wike’s alleged history of turning against former allies such as Goodluck Jonathan and Rotimi Amaechi.

“Wike’s pattern of betrayal is clear. His authoritarian tendencies and manipulative behavior have strained relationships with political allies,” Adeyanju stated. “President Tinubu must be cautious, as Wike’s loyalty is often self-serving.”

Call for Justice and Accountability

In his broader commentary, Adeyanju emphasized the need for leaders to prioritize due process and fair treatment. He commended Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara for standing up to Wike’s influence and urged him to remain steadfast.

Adeyanju reiterated his commitment to activism, vowing to challenge policies that harm vulnerable communities and ensure justice is served. “Activism comes at a personal cost, but I remain committed to fighting for societal change,” he concluded.
