Abdulquadri: Kwara Police Probe Alleged Torture, Death of Man in Custody

Date:

  • Family accuses police of torture, demands justice for deceased detainee.
  • Police command promises thorough investigation into the tragic incident.

The Kwara State Police Command has initiated a discreet investigation into the sudden death of 35-year-old Jimoh Abdulquadri, who passed away in police custody on December 20, 2024.

Jimoh, a resident of the Balogun Fulani community in Ilorin, was arrested on December 19 over an alleged debt of N220,000 owed to one Peter, said to be related to a police officer. Reports indicate that he died less than 24 hours after his arrest, with his family alleging that he was tortured to death.

Family members, including Jimoh’s mother, Mrs. Adijat Moriyike, and his elder brother, Ismail, claim that he suffered severe physical abuse while in detention. Ismail said:

“My brother was arrested with his phone and N350,000. Hours later, we were informed to come and bail him, only to find him dead at the General Hospital mortuary in Ilorin. His face was swollen, blood oozed from his nose, and his body bore bruises. Police claim he hanged himself, but that’s impossible given the conditions of the cell.”

The family alleges that the person owed the money influenced his arrest and mistreatment, as the creditor is reportedly the elder brother of a police officer. They are demanding a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and justice for Jimoh.

Reacting to the allegations, Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, acknowledged the tragic incident and assured the public that the case is being thoroughly investigated.

“The Kwara State Police Command is aware of the unfortunate incident leading to the death of Mr. Jimoh Abdulquadri. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the cause of death, and no stone will be left unturned,” Ejire-Adeyemi stated.

The command has promised to communicate further developments as investigations progress, urging the public to remain calm. Meanwhile, calls for transparency and justice continue to mount as the family appeals to higher authorities to intervene.
