Mohbad’s Widow Accuses Late Singer’s Father of Delaying DNA Test Amid Paternity Dispute
The widow of the late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has accused the singer’s father, Joseph Aloba, of stalling the court-ordered DNA test to resolve the paternity dispute over her son.
Mohbad’s widow, Omowunmi alleged that Aloba’s refusal to agree on a neutral medical facility has hindered the resolution of the case, which has lingered since the Magistrate Court in Ikorodu, Lagos, directed both parties to conduct the test in July 2024.
Court Intervention and Stalemate
The court had mandated the test to be conducted at a mutually agreed-upon laboratory under supervision to ensure reliability. However, disagreements over the choice of facilities have stalled progress.
Omowunmi’s legal team rejected Aloba’s choice of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, citing concerns previously noted by the court. Aloba, in turn, objected to Omowunmi’s proposed Lagoon Hospitals. In a bid to resolve the impasse, Omowunmi suggested The Eko Hospital and Reddington Hospitals as alternatives but claimed Aloba failed to respond to her December 2024 proposal.
Accusations of Defamation and Misrepresentation
In a letter dated January 9, 2025, Omowunmi’s lawyer, Kabir Akingbolu of Salawu Akingbolu Chambers, accused Aloba of spreading misinformation on social media, including allegations that Omowunmi was unwilling to proceed with the DNA test.
“We saw Mr. Taiwo Odumosu, counsel for the Applicant, misrepresenting us on social media, claiming we are not ready for the DNA test, which is untrue. We deserve an apology for such unhealthy allegations,” the letter stated.
Omowunmi also expressed distress over defamatory remarks allegedly made by Aloba, referring to her son as a “bastard” in online posts.
Threat of Independent DNA Test
Omowunmi warned that if Aloba continued to delay the process, she would conduct the DNA test independently and publish the results.
“If your client prefers social media hype over resolution, we will conduct the DNA test ourselves and inform the court of our position,” the letter added.
Father’s Response and Legal Representation Withdrawal
In a response dated January 11, 2025, Emmanuel Oroko of Hillceetee Partners, representing Mohbad’s father, denied the accusations. Oroko clarified that counsel Taiwo Odumosu never alleged that Omowunmi was unwilling to proceed with the DNA test, blaming the delay on the hospitals’ lack of response to inquiries.
Oroko further announced that their chambers would cease representing Aloba in the matter, stating, “This response is necessary to set the record straight as our chambers no longer represent the Applicant.”
With no resolution in sight, the case continues to generate public attention as both parties remain at an impasse. The court is expected to hear updates on the matter at its next sitting.
