- Former Sokoto Governor Resigns from PDP After Two Decades
- Bafarawa Shifts Focus to Youth Entrepreneurship Platform
Former Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, has officially resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to dedicate himself to the newly launched Northern Star Youth Empowerment Initiative (NSYEI).
Bafarawa, who led Sokoto State for two terms, submitted his resignation letter to the PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagun, on January 8, 2025. The letter was formally acknowledged by the party on January 13, 2025.
Focus on Youth Empowerment
In the letter made public in Sokoto, Bafarawa cited his commitment to youth development as the reason for his departure. “I will now focus my attention on creating awareness for youth entrepreneurship and empowerment initiatives aimed at making them self-productive, reducing redundancy, and fostering self-reliance,” he stated.
The Northern Star Youth Empowerment Initiative (NSYEI), launched at Arewa House in Kaduna, is aimed at empowering northern youth with entrepreneurial skills, reducing unemployment, and promoting self-reliance.
Parting Words for the PDP
Bafarawa expressed gratitude for his time in the PDP, saying, “I appreciate the opportunity given to me to contribute my quota to the development of the party as a card-carrying member.” He also wished the party well, stating, “I wish the People’s Democratic Party and its leadership the very best in all their future endeavors.”
Political Influence
As a long-time PDP stalwart, Bafarawa was instrumental in Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal’s re-election in 2019 after breaking ties with his political mentor, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wammako.
Bafarawa’s departure from the PDP marks the end of an era, as he shifts his political influence to empowering northern youth through his new initiative.
