Security forces, led by the Nigeria Police Force, have dismantled a notorious criminal camp in Nimo, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State. The operation, conducted in the early hours of Christmas Eve, targeted a hideout used by kidnappers to hold victims abducted from various parts of the state.

The camp, located in a bush area known as Owa Land, had instilled fear among residents, some of whom had filed petitions with government agencies seeking intervention. Reports indicate that certain members of the community may have aided the criminals in setting up the base.

State Police Command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the operation in a press release. “In the early hours of December 24, 2024, a joint security operation comprising the Military, Civil Defence, and Anambra Vigilante operatives successfully dismantled a criminal camp in Nimo. Several makeshift structures were destroyed, 19 unexploded improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were recovered, and significant injuries were inflicted on fleeing suspects,” Ikenga said.

The operation followed intelligence gathered from ongoing investigations and public reports. Residents of the area had raised alarms about the activities of the gang, prompting swift action by security forces.

A fierce shootout lasting two hours ensued as operatives stormed the camp. Although some suspects managed to escape, authorities are monitoring hospitals and urging medical facilities to report any patients with bullet wounds.

Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, praised the collaboration among security agencies and the public for their role in providing actionable intelligence. “This successful operation underscores the importance of community vigilance and inter-agency cooperation,” he said.

The police assured residents of continued patrols and targeted operations to maintain peace throughout the festive season. Authorities urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to ensure sustained security in the state.
