In recent years, stampedes in Nigeria have become a recurring tragedy, often rooted in economic hardship, poor planning, and desperation. These incidents, frequently linked to food distribution or large gatherings, have claimed hundreds of lives across the country. Below is a timeline of some notable stampedes in Nigeria’s history:

1. Kwara Sallah Stampede (October 16, 2013)

During a Sallah food distribution event organized by former Senate President Bukola Saraki in Ilorin, Kwara State, about 20 people died, and several others were injured. The chaotic rush for food items highlighted the dire economic conditions many Nigerians face.

2. Anambra Church Stampede (November 2, 2013)

At least 25 people were killed and 200 injured during a religious programme at the Holy Ghost Adoration Ministry in Uke, Anambra State. A false alarm about a fire outbreak caused panic, leading to a fatal scramble among worshippers.

3. Immigration Recruitment Stampede (March 15, 2014)

A poorly coordinated nationwide recruitment exercise by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) saw millions of job seekers flocking to overcrowded venues. The exercise turned deadly, with 16 confirmed deaths in cities like Abuja, Port Harcourt, Minna, and Benin.

4. Port Harcourt Church Stampede (May 28, 2022)

In Rivers State, over 31 people lost their lives during a “Shop for Free” programme organized by King’s Assembly Church. The event, intended to distribute free food items, drew an overwhelming crowd, resulting in chaos and a deadly stampede.

5. Lagos Church Stampede (August 18, 2022)

A crusade at the Comfort Life Mission International Church in Ikotun, Lagos, ended tragically when a stampede claimed two lives and left many others injured. Worshippers rushing to attend the second service triggered the incident.

6. Customs Rice Rush in Lagos (February 23, 2024)

Seven people died during the distribution of seized rice by the Nigerian Customs Service in Yaba, Lagos. The initiative, intended to alleviate economic hardship, required beneficiaries to pay N10,000 for a 25kg bag of rice. The large turnout led to a tragic rush.

7. Nasarawa University Stampede (March 22, 2024)

Three students of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, died during the distribution of rice by the state government at the university’s convocation square. Several others sustained injuries.

8. Bauchi Almsgiving Tragedy (March 23, 2024)

An almsgiving event organized by Shafa Holdings Company Plc in Bauchi claimed seven lives. Chaos ensued as people scrambled for food items, resulting in fatalities and injuries.

9. Oyo Carnival Stampede (December 2024)

At a carnival in Ibadan, Oyo State, over 35 people, mostly children, were killed in a stampede triggered by the distribution of free food items. The event, intended to feed the first 5,000 attendees, saw an uncontrollable crowd surge.

10. Abuja Church Stampede (December 2024)

Ten people died at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, during a relief distribution event. The lack of crowd control led to a deadly crush among attendees.

11. Anambra Rice Giveaway Tragedy (December 2024)

On the same day as the Abuja incident, 20 people were killed in a stampede in the Ojika community of Anambra State. The event was organized to distribute rice and other gifts but ended in a heartbreaking disaster.

Recurring Themes

The common thread in these tragedies is desperation driven by economic hardship. Poor crowd management and insufficient planning exacerbate the situation, turning acts of goodwill into fatal events.

Call for Change

Stampedes in Nigeria remain a stark reminder of the urgent need for better planning, crowd control, and socioeconomic reforms to alleviate the desperation that drives such tragedies.
