In the wake of multiple tragic stampedes during food distribution events across Nigeria, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has expressed profound sorrow and concern. He attributes these incidents to systemic failures exacerbating the nation’s economic hardships.

On December 21, 2024, a stampede at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, resulted in the deaths of ten individuals, including children, as they scrambled for palliatives.

This tragedy followed a similar incident in Ibadan, Oyo State, where 35 children lost their lives during a Christmas funfair stampede.

Additionally, reports indicate that 19 more lives were lost in Okija, Anambra State, under comparable circumstances.

Obi took to social media to express his condolences and highlight the systemic issues at play. He stated, “The desperate quest for survival in these harsh economic times has driven our people to extremes in their search for food, often at the cost of their lives.”

He questioned how a nation endowed with abundant resources could face such dire circumstances, emphasizing the need for urgent and effective solutions.

These incidents have sparked widespread reactions on social media, with citizens expressing grief, frustration, and calls for accountability. Many are urging the government to implement sustainable economic policies to alleviate the hardships driving such desperate actions.

The recurring nature of these tragedies underscores the pressing need for systemic reforms to address the root causes of economic disparity and ensure the safety and well-being of all Nigerians.
