Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has pledged to fulfill the bail conditions for human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi, who is facing a 16-count defamation charge filed by legal luminary Afe Babalola.

An Ekiti Magistrate Court granted Farotimi bail set at ₦30 million, with conditions including the provision of three sureties owning landed property in Ekiti State, surrendering his international passport, and refraining from granting media interviews.

Tanko Yunusa, a former spokesperson for Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign, announced Obi’s decision on Friday via his X account. Yunusa stated, “I consulted His Excellency, Peter Obi, as the leader of the Obidient Movement. As a respecter of rule of law, due process, and order, he offered to take Dele Farotimi on the bail conditions.”

Obi’s intervention underscores his commitment to the rule of law and due process, aiming to resolve the situation in the best interest of all parties involved. Farotimi, known for his activism and outspoken nature, has pleaded not guilty to all 16 counts of defamation.

The case has attracted significant public attention, with discussions about the implications for freedom of expression and the legal processes involved. Obi’s involvement is seen by many as a significant gesture in support of legal fairness and human rights advocacy.
