Mexican wrestling legend Rey Misterio Sr., born Miguel Ángel López Días, has passed away at the age of 66. The news was confirmed by his son, El Hijo de Rey Misterio (Miguel Aarón López Hernández), in a heartfelt Facebook post on Friday, December 20.

“Friends and family, I regret to inform you that my father, Miguel Ángel López Días, Rey Misterio Sr., passed away this morning. I will keep you informed. Thank you,” the post read. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Legacy and Impact

Rey Misterio Sr., who began his career as a boxer before transitioning to wrestling in 1976, was a pioneer in the world of Lucha Libre, Mexico’s beloved wrestling tradition. Over his illustrious career, he won numerous titles, including the:

  • Revolution Tag Team Championship (with his son),
  • IWC World Middleweight Championship, and
  • WWA World Junior Light Heavyweight Championship.

He was also a mentor to many, including his nephew, Rey Misterio Jr., now a global WWE superstar.

The wrestling promotion Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide honored the late icon, stating:

“We mourn the sensitive passing of Miguel Ángel López Días, known as Rey Misterio Sr. We send our deepest condolences to his loved ones and lift our prayers for his eternal rest.”

Rey Misterio Jr.’s son, WWE superstar Dominik Misterio, paid tribute on Instagram by sharing poignant photos of his grandfather, captioned with a black heart emoji: “.”

A Month of Tragedy

The passing of Rey Misterio Sr. comes just weeks after the death of his brother, Roberto Gutierrez, who died at the age of 76 on November 17.
