The Oyo State Government has confirmed the arrest of the organizers behind a children’s Christmas party in Ibadan that ended in a tragic stampede, claiming the lives of 30 children. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning at the Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan.

The event was organized by Queen Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, in collaboration with Agidigbo 88.7 FM, owned by Oriyomi Hamzat. The tragedy unfolded as hundreds of children and families gathered at the venue.

Governor Makinde Reacts

In an official statement, Governor Seyi Makinde described the day as “tragic” and expressed deep sympathy for the grieving families. He assured residents that the state government has launched a comprehensive investigation and promised to hold those responsible accountable.

“This is a very sad day for us in Oyo State. We sympathize with the parents whose joy has been turned into mourning. While investigations are ongoing, the primary organizers of the event have been taken into custody,” Makinde stated.

The governor also announced immediate measures to restore order at the venue, including deploying security personnel, ambulances, and medical staff. The event was shut down, and attendees were escorted out of the premises.

Promise of Justice

Governor Makinde reassured the public that anyone directly or indirectly involved in the tragedy will face consequences. “We are taking all realistic measures to ensure the venue is secured and to prevent further loss of life,” he said.

He urged residents to remain calm as security agencies continue their investigation and added, “Our hearts remain with the families and loved ones impacted by this tragedy. May the souls of the departed rest in peace. Amen.”

The incident has cast a pall over the festive season in Oyo State, with calls growing for tighter safety measures at public events to prevent such disasters in the future.
