- Ex-presidential aide defends Buhari’s decision to retain fuel subsidies
- ‘Ore Mekunu’: Buhari’s policies prioritized ordinary Nigerians, says Adesina
Femi Adesina, the former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has praised his former boss as a leader deeply committed to the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
Adesina highlighted Buhari’s refusal to remove fuel subsidies during his presidency, describing the decision as a reflection of his role as “Ore Mekunu,” a Yoruba phrase meaning “friend of the poor.”
“Buhari consistently made choices that prioritized the masses,” Adesina said. “He resisted actions that could further burden the people, even when he knew some corrupt leaders were exploiting the system.”
The Subsidy Debate
Adesina shed light on the contentious issue of fuel subsidies, which many viewed as a financial drain on Nigeria’s economy. According to him, Buhari was fully aware of the need to end the subsidy regime but prioritized the welfare of ordinary Nigerians over economic pressures.
“When oil prices soared to $100–$140 per barrel on the international market, the ordinary people gained nothing,” Adesina explained. “So, Buhari asked, why should they bear the brunt when prices fall? His argument was simple: the people should not suffer.”
Despite acknowledging the long-term need for subsidy removal, Buhari chose not to implement it during his administration, fearing it could destabilize society.
Buhari’s Post-Retirement Influence
Nearly two years after leaving office, Buhari’s connection with the masses remains intact. Adesina noted that people still flock to him, drawn by his unyielding focus on the welfare of ordinary citizens.
“Even in retirement, Buhari remains a magnet for the people,” Adesina said, emphasizing that his former boss’s compassion and policies continue to resonate with Nigerians.
The comments offer fresh insights into the leadership style of Buhari, who has been both praised and criticized for his decisions during his tenure. For Adesina, however, the former president’s legacy lies in his unwavering commitment to the people.
