Google unveiled its 2024 Year in Search report on Tuesday, showcasing the topics, personalities, and events that captured Nigerians’ attention throughout the year. Topping the list of news searches were the U.S. elections, Nigeria’s reinstated national anthem, and the national grid, reflecting the country’s focus on political, cultural, and infrastructural matters.

“In Nigeria, this year’s results show a continued interest in the political and economic landscape, with searches related to the U.S. elections, the new national anthem, and the national grid topping the news category in this order,” Google stated.

Among trending personalities, popular social media influencer Bobrisky led the searches, underscoring the public’s fascination with prominent figures. The Nigerian music industry also made waves, with artists such as Shallipopi and Khaid enjoying significant attention. Boy Spyce’s I Don’t Care topped the trending song list, followed by Ayra Starr’s Ozeba and Commas. In the lyrics category, searches for Ogechi, Ozeba, and Chandler Moore’s Omemma stood out.

Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google West Africa’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager, remarked, “The 2024 Year in Search offers a unique lens into the questions, interests, and conversations that shaped the lives of Nigerians this year. From cultural milestones to pressing concerns, these insights reflect how Search continues to be a valuable tool for users to navigate and better understand their world.”

The report also highlighted Nigerians’ growing interest in entertainment. Top movie searches included A Tribe Called Judah, Treasure In The Sky, and Damsel, while TV series such as Supacell, My Demon, and Queen of Tears drew significant attention. Culinary curiosity was reflected in the Pornstar Martini recipe topping recipe searches.

Practical and global concerns were evident in trending questions like “How much is a dollar to naira today?”, “How to get perfectly defined curls for African hair?”, and “Who won the U.S. presidential election?”. Nigerians also frequently searched for the meanings of words such as demure, steeze, and pet peeves.

Key events dominated searches, including the U.S. elections, where Donald Trump claimed victory in November, and Nigeria’s reinstatement of its old national anthem, previously abandoned in 1978, by President Bola Tinubu on May 29. Meanwhile, the national grid continued to draw interest as reports indicated over 10 collapses in 2024 alone.

The 2024 Year in Search report underscores how global and local events shaped the lives and priorities of Nigerians, offering a snapshot of the nation’s evolving interests and concerns.
