The Muslim community in Nigeria is mourning the loss of one of its most respected figures, Alhaji Muyideen Bello, who passed away at the age of 84. Born in 1940 in Ibadan, Oyo State, Alhaji Bello was celebrated for his profound Islamic teachings and steadfast commitment to spiritual and scholarly excellence.

The announcement of his death was made on Friday morning by Alfa Aribidesi of At-Tawdeeh Islamic Da’awah, another prominent Islamic scholar. Following the announcement, Alhaji Basit Olarenwaju, an Islamic singer and devoted follower of the late Bello, also confirmed the news on his official Facebook page, sharing an image of the scholar accompanied by tearful emojis.

Reactions to His Death

Tributes have poured in from across the nation. Sheikh Taofeeq Akeugbagold, another respected Islamic cleric, expressed his grief in an emotional Facebook post:

“Today is one of my saddest days! My father and mentor has returned to his Creator. SULTONUL WAHIZEEN of Yorubaland Sheikh Muyideen AJANI BELLO, may Allah be pleased with your soul. Aljannah fridaos for you. Our heart is full of grief and our eyes full of tears but we will say nothing but what will please our Creator, the sole commander of life and death – ALLAH.”

Details of the cleric’s funeral are yet to be officially announced, though reports suggest he may be buried according to Islamic rites on Friday evening.

A Legacy of Wisdom and Fearless Preaching

The late Alhaji Muyideen Bello was renowned for his eloquence, deep understanding of Islam, and dedication to truth. Described as a fearless preacher, he once stated:

“From my childhood, I was noted for saying the truth no matter whose ox is gored. It is with utmost truth that we should speak God’s words every day. That is the way I approach my sermons.”

Bello’s journey into Islamic scholarship began early. At just nine years old, he moved to live with his uncle, an Islamic scholar in Ibadan, to deepen his Quranic knowledge. His formative years laid the foundation for a lifetime of devotion to Islamic education and public service.

Unlike many of his contemporaries, Bello embraced formal education, earning a National Certificate of Education (NCE) while working briefly in electronics. He saw education as a means of self-sustenance, remarking, “Even at that time, I knew I would one day become an Islamic cleric. But I also wanted to make sure that I had a job that would put food on my table.”

Mourners Flock to Ibadan Residence

Since the announcement of his passing, grief-stricken mourners have gathered at Bello’s residence in Akobo, Ibadan, to console his family and pay their respects. The atmosphere has been described as a blend of sorrow and gratitude, with many reflecting on the immense impact of Bello’s spiritual guidance and dedication to unity within the Muslim Ummah.

A Lifetime of Impact

Alhaji Muyideen Bello’s teachings transcended generations, earning him admiration across Nigeria and beyond. His commitment to peace, unity, and truth remains a legacy that will inspire countless generations to come.

Nigerians across social media have expressed prayers and condolences, emphasizing that his life and work stand as enduring examples of faith, knowledge, and integrity.
