  • Concerns Over Wage Adjustment Highlighted, Strike Ruled Out

Organised Labour in Enugu State has confirmed the commencement of the N80,000 minimum wage implementation in November 2024, surpassing the N70,000 national benchmark.

Labour leaders stated they have no plans to embark on industrial action, despite observed discrepancies in consequential adjustments to the new wage structure. They expressed confidence in Governor Peter Mbah’s dedication to addressing the issue, citing his consistent commitment to workers’ welfare since taking office.

In a joint statement issued in Enugu on Tuesday, Comrade Fabian Nwigbo (Chairman, NLC Enugu State Council), Comrade Ben Asogwa (Chairman, TUC), and Comrade Ezekiel Omeh (Chairman, JNC) addressed media reports misrepresenting the state’s wage compliance.

“The Enugu State Government paid the N80,000 minimum wage approved by the governor in the November 2024 salary,” the statement clarified. “However, the payment did not fully reflect the consequential adjustments required for proper implementation.”

The labour leaders assured workers that the governor, known for prioritizing their wellbeing, would resolve the matter. They noted significant achievements in his administration, including clearing a ₦1.9 billion backlog of leave allowances for public primary school teachers and settling ₦467 million in salary arrears for staff at the Enugu State College of Education Technical (ESCET).

“There is no strike in view because the government has shown a consistent pattern of addressing workers’ concerns,” the statement concluded.
