Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has urged Northern Nigerians to avoid criticizing President Bola Tinubu over the proposed tax reform bills, emphasizing their potential benefits.

Speaking at Channels TV’s Town Hall meeting on Monday, Dogara praised Tinubu for taking bold steps to address economic challenges.

Dogara noted that the proposed reforms are not anti-North and highlighted Tinubu’s establishment of the Ministry of Livestock Development as a groundbreaking initiative.

“I want to address my brothers in the North. This is not the time to condemn the president or label these bills as anti-North,” Dogara said. “The president has done something significant. If he sees this through, he will have achieved what no Northern leader in my lifetime has accomplished.”

The former Speaker underscored the economic potential of the livestock sector, noting the global market size for dairy products is projected to reach $2.5 trillion within three years.

“If the North can organize itself to capture just five percent of this global market, that translates to $250 billion. This would enable the region to thrive independently. We are, after all, the most resource-endowed part of Nigeria,” he said.

FELLOW PRESS reports that Dogara’s remarks come amid mixed reactions to Tinubu’s proposed reforms, which aim to restructure Nigeria’s tax system and improve economic sustainability.
