UNIBEN Record-Breaker: James Alleh Shares Journey to Bagging Historic 4.98 CGPA

Date:

James Alleh, a 25-year-old graduate from the University of Benin (UNIBEN), has etched his name in the institution’s history books by earning a remarkable 4.98 CGPA in Petroleum Engineering—the highest ever recorded at the university. His story is one of faith, resilience, and determination in the face of adversity.

Growing up in a humble family in Igarra, Edo State, Alleh faced numerous challenges, particularly after losing his father in 2011. His mother, a petty trader, shouldered the financial burden of raising five boys, often relying on community support. Despite these challenges, Alleh remained focused on his education.

Initially aspiring to study Medicine, Alleh pivoted to Petroleum Engineering after a dream confirmed his new path. This decision marked the beginning of an extraordinary academic journey. Balancing academics, leadership roles, and church commitments, Alleh rose to become the departmental president and the president of the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

“Funding was one of my biggest challenges,” Alleh shared. He considered dropping out at various points but found lifelines in scholarships, mentorship, and his unwavering faith. His study regimen involved up to 15 hours of daily preparation, disciplined time management, and reliance on prayer to overcome obstacles.

Alleh’s achievement has opened numerous doors, with mentorship offers and career opportunities pouring in. Reflecting on his journey, he advised students to remain consistent, leverage available resources like scholarships, and pursue excellence regardless of systemic flaws.

Currently awaiting his NYSC call-up, Alleh plans to explore career opportunities in the energy industry or pursue advanced studies. Above all, he remains grateful to God, his family, and his mentors for their support throughout his academic journey.

James Alleh’s story is an inspiration, proving that with determination and faith, greatness is achievable.
