Tinubu Confers GCON to Indian PM Modi, Strengthens Nigeria-India Ties

President Bola Tinubu has conferred Nigeria’s second-highest national honor, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The prestigious award was presented during the Nigeria-India Bilateral Meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Sunday.

President Tinubu emphasized that the honor symbolizes Nigeria’s appreciation of its partnership with India and a renewed commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.

“Nigeria values its excellent relationship with India, and we are determined to deepen and broaden it for the mutual benefit of our two countries,” Tinubu said.

Highlighting India’s democratic achievements, Tinubu lauded Modi for his leadership and resilience, noting his historic three consecutive electoral victories in a complex and diverse society.

“This award signifies Nigeria’s appreciation and commitment to India as a trusted partner,” Tinubu added.

Indian PM Pledges Support for Nigeria

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his gratitude for the honor and extended condolences to Nigerians affected by recent devastating floods, including in Maiduguri, Borno State.

To assist with ongoing humanitarian efforts, Modi announced the donation of 20 tonnes of relief materials to Nigeria.

“Our discussions with President Tinubu were highly productive,” Modi said. “We explored ways to enhance our strategic partnership, with immense potential for collaboration in defense, energy, technology, trade, health, and education.”

The meeting marked a new chapter in Nigeria-India relations, signaling enhanced cooperation across critical sectors to benefit both nations.
