Donald Trump announced Thursday that his trusted campaign manager, Susie Wiles, will serve as White House Chief of Staff, marking her as the first woman in U.S. history to hold the role.
“Susie Wiles just helped me secure one of the greatest political victories in American history, and she was pivotal in both my 2016 and 2020 campaigns,” Trump stated. “She’s tough, smart, and widely respected. It’s a well-deserved honor for Susie, and I have no doubt she’ll make our country proud.”
Wiles, a seasoned political strategist, has maintained a disciplined campaign approach that Trump praised as his “most sophisticated and structured campaign yet.” Her new role comes with significant influence, particularly around managing access to Trump. According to sources, Wiles stipulated clear conditions, including tighter control over who has Oval Office access, reflecting past difficulties experienced by previous chiefs of staff managing informal advisors and acquaintances during Trump’s first term.
CNN reported that Wiles’ disciplined approach was evident as she often had to restrict Trump’s visitor access during his campaign, sometimes confronting him about limiting fringe voices within his circle. Despite these boundaries, occasional lapses, like an incident involving far-right activist Laura Loomer, sparked controversy.
Wiles’ appointment solidified after Brooke Rollins, also under consideration for the role, withdrew, acknowledging Wiles’ clear path to the position. Rollins, a former Trump administration official, will continue to support Trump’s policy efforts through the America First Policy Institute.
With the chief of staff position, Wiles joins other historic women in high-ranking U.S. government roles, breaking yet another glass ceiling. Known for her dedication to Trump’s cause and background as the daughter of NFL broadcaster Pat Summerall, Wiles has been an essential advisor, overseeing his Florida win in 2020 and leading his recent campaign. Her low-profile, results-driven style has garnered praise, including from Turning Point USA CEO Charlie Kirk, who noted, “She would make an incredible Chief of Staff. The president, and America, would be well-served with Susie in that key role.”
