Justin Timberlake Pleads Guilty to Lesser Charge in Drunk Driving Case, Urges Others to Learn from His Mistake

Date:

Justin Timberlake, the pop star and former NSYNC member, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of driving while impaired, following his arrest for drunk driving in the Hamptons earlier this summer. On Friday, Timberlake avoided a more serious DWI charge by agreeing to a plea deal in a New York courthouse.

Speaking to reporters after the hearing, Timberlake expressed regret and urged others to make better choices. “I’ve always tried to hold myself to a high standard, and this wasn’t it,” Timberlake admitted. “Even if you’ve had one drink, don’t get behind the wheel. There are so many alternatives—call a friend, get an Uber.”

Timberlake was arrested in June after being pulled over for failing to stop at a stop sign and swerving in his lane. Though he admitted to having a martini, he refused a breathalyzer test. Court records indicated that his eyes were “bloodshot and glassy” and there was a “strong odor of alcohol” on his breath.

As part of the plea deal, Timberlake faces a fine between $300 and $500, a 90-day suspension of his driver’s license, and must complete between 25 and 40 hours of community service. He will also make a public safety announcement to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving.

Reflecting on the incident, Timberlake said, “This is a mistake that I made, but I hope others can learn from it. I know I have.”
