- Ex-House Speaker Says Northern Leadership Failed the Region
- “Tinubu Is Not Our Problem,” Dogara Declares
Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has criticized northern leaders for failing to drive development in the region despite decades of political dominance.
Speaking at a town hall meeting for Christian leaders in northern Nigeria on Friday, Dogara highlighted the persistent poverty and lack of progress in the North, attributing it to poor leadership and inadequate investment in meaningful projects.
The event, themed “Church and Society: Tax Reforms and Matters Arising,” addressed critical issues of governance and economic challenges in the country.
Dogara refuted claims that the South, under President Bola Tinubu, was marginalizing the North. Instead, he urged northern leaders and citizens to reflect on their own roles in the region’s stagnation.
“We are all northerners, and it should be made clear that President Tinubu or the South is not our problem; they have not come to cheat the North,” Dogara said.
He further questioned the achievements of northern leaders during their long years in power.
“For over 40 years, northerners ruled this country. What did we achieve? The North remains the same, impoverished by our own leaders,” Dogara stated.
The former Speaker’s comments have sparked discussions on the need for accountability and strategic development policies to address the socioeconomic challenges facing northern Nigeria.
